The College began as Collegiate School which was a Boarding School for juniors and a Proprietary School for University for seniors.It became the Sheffield Royal Grammar School in the 1880s. In 1906 it was converted into the University of Sheffield Teachers' College and in 1911 became the City of Sheffield Training College.In World War I it was used as the Third Northern General Hospital.
